Meet Gillian, RVT & Co-Founder

My path into veterinary medicine started when I was two and a half years old.

My mum had taken my little brother and me, along with our dog Shaughn, to the vet to have a lump between Shaughn’s shoulder blades looked at. The vet said it was a fatty lump and offered to clean it up right there. Mum started to take my brother and me back to the waiting room, but I said I wanted to stay and watch.

So I stood there, two and a half years old, and watched the whole thing: the incision, the lump coming out, every part of it. From that day forward, I knew I wanted to work in veterinary medicine. I’ve never wanted to do anything else.

🐴 Horses run in the family

My paternal grandmother, Joy, was one of the founders of the Lethbridge Therapeutic Riding Association (originally the Lethbridge Handicapped Riding Association) back in 1976. Riding has always been in our blood.

I started riding when I was 13, fell hard for barrel racing, and competed for years. A car accident in 2019 ended my riding career, but the love for horses, and the deep respect for the people who care for them, has never gone anywhere.

🏥 From reception desk to emergency floor

Over the years I’ve worked as a veterinary receptionist, a kennel technician, a Technologist Assistant, and now as a Registered Veterinary Technologist at an emergency hospital, with additional experience in general practice clinics.

Across every role, in every clinic, I’ve watched the same heartbreaking moment play out over and over: a family loves their pet, wants to do the right thing, and simply can’t afford the supplies, treatment, or both that their animal needs. That gap, between what families want for their animals and what they can afford to do for them, is the reason this site exists.

🐕 Beyond the clinic walls

My experience with animals extends beyond the clinic. I’m a dog trainer, and I previously worked as a groomer. Those years taught me something every clinical role reinforced: an animal’s wellbeing isn’t just about medical care. It’s about behaviour, comfort, grooming, handling, and the everyday details that make life better for them and easier for the people who love them.

🤝 Giving back

Outside of clinic hours, I volunteer as an RVT with two organizations that mean a great deal to me:

• Canadian Animal Blood Bank (CABB): A national non-profit that collects, processes, and distributes life-saving blood products to veterinary clinics across Canada. Volunteer donors and veterinary professionals work together to make sure dogs in emergency situations have access to the transfusions they need.
• Canadian Animal Task Force (CATF): Volunteer-run, on-site spay and neuter clinics held in First Nations communities across Alberta, helping animals and the families who care for them through accessible veterinary care.

Volunteering with these organizations is some of the most meaningful work I do. It’s also a constant reminder of why affordable, accessible veterinary care matters so much.
